India celebrates 69th Independence day on this 15th August, 2015. At this day India got freedom from the British rule after long years of slavery. On 15 August 1947, Jawaharlal Nehru, who had become the first Prime Minister of India raised the Indian national flag above the Lahore Gate of the Red Fort in Delhi and the same continues on each subsequent Independence Day. This year, PM Narendra Modi unfurls the National flag at Red Fort.
The Indian National flag was designed by Pingali Venkaya. It was adopted on July 24, 1947, in the wake of India’s independence from the British, and it is made only from khadi, domestically spun Indian cotton, as a symbol of nationalism and freedom.
The flag of India — called the Tiranga has three horizontal bars of saffron, white and green, and is embossed in the middle with a blue wheel. Saffron, white and green colors were chosen for the three bands, representing courage and sacrifice, peace and truth, and faith and chivalry respectively. The circular symbol in the center of the flag, the Ashoka chakra, is the wheel of the dharma, the cosmic law that upholds the order of the universe.
The wheel’s diameter approximates to the white band’s width and it has 24 spokes. The Indian flag has a ratio of two by three (where the length of the flag is 1.5 times that of the width). All three stripes of the flag (saffron, white and green) are to be equal in width and length. Download different images of Indian Flag from below. Saffron: The upper saffron part of the flag is meant to denote courage and selflessness. It is a religiously significant color to the Hindu, Buddhist and Jain religions as it signifies renunciation and the absolution of the ego.
White: The white stripe in the middle of the flag is representative of honesty, purity and peace. In Indian philosophy white also represents cleanliness and knowledge. It signifies light and the path of truth to guide India’s national conduct.
Green: The green stipe on the bottom half of the flag represents faith, fertility and prosperity. In Indian philosophy it is considered to be a festive and stabilizing color that represents life and happiness. It demonstrates the value placed on the earth as the ground upon which all life is dependent.
